Is social networking really changing how we create our self-identity? Are we all becoming shallow and voyeuristic? These philosophical questions plus the $63 trillion dollar question were discussed on Philosophy Talk last week with Stanford professors, Ken Taylor and John Perry and their guest, University of Washington Professor, Malcolm Parks.
The show called “Social Networking” was originally broadcasted on 7/5/09 and was recorded at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon.
I attended the 63rd annual Tony Awards on June 7th as an investor and supporter of “33 Variations,” which was written and directed by my dear friend Moises Kaufman. “33 Variations” was up for Best Play, Best Actress (Jane Fonda), Best Supporting Actor, Best Lighting, and Best Scenic Design. It ended up winning for Best Scenic Design.
Jaffa is 3 years old, highly photogenic, loves to be cuddled, and is the star of her non-profit organization's social enterprise venture. She is also a koala bear.
Tim & Jaffa Jaffa lives at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane, Australia. Lone Pine is the largest and oldest Koala Sanctuary in the world, featuring not only over 130 koalas, but also a multitude of kangaroos, exotic birds, dingoes, crocodiles, lizards, and the occasional tasmanian devil or two.
Social networking is key to the success of the youth programs of ZeroDivide grantee REACH LA. Ovahness Leaders and Girl2Girl (G2G) Leaders use social networking to communicate with their youth constituencies and promote their programs and activities. For them, MySpace is still the networking site of choice. The minute a decision is made about an event (such as the Ovahness Skate Party), it is posted on the Ovahness MySpace=2.0 site. One REACH LA staff person then posts the information and sends out messages to all the Ovahness friends.
With all the advances in technology, the world of giving continues to change rapidly. With all the latest buzz about social networking, it was only a matter of time that philanthropists began to test different ways of harnassing the power of social networks for social good. The Case Foundation and PARADE magazine have teamed up to issue a challenge: the nonprofits and individuals that are able to attract the largest number of unique donors between now and Jan 31st will receive grants ranging from $1K-$50K for their cause.
Out of curiosity I created a poll to see what social networking website(s) you all are using. Please take the time to fill it out!
