Jacinda Wong, Development Associate at ZeroDivide volunteers at the first ever Asian Pacific American Presidential Town Hall in Irvine California on May 17, 2008. Organized by APIA Vote, the event drew a crowd of over 500 people. Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John McCain addressed the crowd in various ways. Hillary Clinton was on direct satellite feed from Kentucky and John Chiang, California's Comptroller served as her surrogate. Barack Obama addressed the crowd by phone from rural Oregon and Congressman Xavier Becerra served as his surrogate. California Assembly Member Van Tran spoke on behalf of John McCain. The event also featured trailblazers in the world of the Asian Pacific American politics such as Norman Mineta, the first Asian American to serve on a Presidential Cabinet (Secretary of Commerce under Presidential Clinton and Secretary of Transportation under President George W. Bush).
