The 2008 presidential election ushered in a new era for social media technology. We saw the use of voting tweets, iphone applications, candidate text messages, and a flood of politically inspired videos and tunes on YouTube. Today's presidential inauguration continued the spirit of innovative technology. CNN.com partnered with Facebook, streaming live coverage from Washington D.C. alongside millions of Facebook updates from users all over the globe. Although we sometimes don't admit it, we love Facebook, and this creative Web 2.0 usage is why.
The blending of CNN news coverage with the personal thoughts and emotions of millions of everyday Facebook users allowed us to experience the inauguration as if we were all gathered together in one living room. We hope everyone, from the Obama administration to grassroots organizations, continue to embrace new uses of technology to engage every community member.

Current TV and Twitter
During the 2008 presidential debates, Current TV and Twitter teamed up to add Twitter posts to their live broadcasts of the debates. They did the same thing today, airing posts with their broadcast of the inauguration.
Not only do these Web 2.0 tools connect people but they inspire new partnerships.

Amazing to feel connected to so many people
Seeing Facebook updates real-time while watching the inauguration was incredibly amazing. I felt as though I was part of community of strangers who were brought together via technology to share, reflect, and connect with one another on a national & international level. What power.
